Conscious Mixtape Series Vol 1: Serious Times

September 25, 2007 | 0 Comments

CONSCIOUS MIXTAPE SERIES VOL 1: SERIOUS TIMES (small)

SERIOUS TIMES, the first installment in Al Fingers’ CONSCIOUS MIXTAPE SERIES, is a mixtape compiled in reaction to the tragedy of 9/11 and the subsequent illegal war waged on Iraq by George Bush and Tony Blair. Named after the stunning debut single from Windel Beneto Edward aka Gyptian, the mix features a variety of antiwar songs, by artists such as Barrington Levy, Bob Dylan, Turbulence, Luciano, and Sinead O’Connor. It also features the acclaimed Truth & Rights remix of Marvin’s Gaye’s classic antiwar tune, “What’s Going On”.

Conscious Mixtape Series Vol 1: Serious Times

September 25, 2007 | 0 Comments

serious sunday times

I finally finished the SERIOUS TIMES mixtape, which is a musical reaction to the state of the world, in particular to the politricks of Bush, Blair, and their cronies. It took a while, mainly because it was difficult to find seventy minutes of music that was relevant to the subject but also good enough for a mixtape – artists making music with any kind of political message are definitely in the minority! Xtra large big up then to the all the righteous artists featured on the mix, including Gyptian, Bob Dylan, Luciano, The Honeydrippers, Turbulence, Marvin Gaye, Bob Marley, Dennis Brown, Richie Spice and Sinead O’Connor. Available for download in the Mixtapes section…

Sizzla Kalonji

September 1, 2007 | 0 Comments

Sizzla

Sizzla Kalonji (aka Miguel Orlando Collins) was born on 17 April 1976 in the Jamaican parish of St Mary, and was raised in the August Town, east Kingston by Rasta parents. He rose to fame in the mid to late 1990s as a reggae singjay, voicing early albums for Fattis Burrell (Exterminator) and Bobby Dixon (Digital B). His output since has been prolific (even by Jamaican standards) and, although not all of his releases are of the same high standard, he has scored many a hit within both the roots reggae and dancehall genres. Rarely giving media interviews, Sizzla is regarded by many as a controversial character and sometimes appears to walk a fine line between a righteous and badman lifestyle. However, in the humble opinion of Al Fingers, Kalonji is one of, if not the most creative, musical artists alive today. If you haven’t already, check out the albums “Praise Ye Jah” (1997), Black Woman & Child” (1997), and “Da Real Thing” (2002) for a better understanding of his firey brand of reggae music.
