Slim Smith

Slim Smith (1948–73), real name Keith Smith, was born in Kingston, Jamaica, and is regarded as one of the country’s great vocalists. Singing from an early age, he sang for The Techniques and later founded The Uniques, voicing soulful, emotional rocksteady for many of Jamaica’s top producers including Duke Reid (Treasure Isle), Bunny Lee, Prince Buster, and Coxsone Dodd (Studio One). Despite his talent, his life was short and ended in tragedy. Aged just 24 he was detained at Bellevue sanatorium, suffering from personal problems. The following year, while attempting to access his parent’s house through a broken window, he accidentally cut himself and died from loss of blood. He is fondly remembered.
