Busy Signal Inna Gary Mix Up

Vybz Kartel may have been 2009’s deejay of the year, but Busy Signal wasn’t far off, and judging by some of his recent tunes (check You Never Knew and his three versions over Shane Brown’s re-lick of the Boops riddim), 2010 is going to be a Busy year. Right now though, he’s in the middle of a strange mix up.

In the chorus of his Busy’s version of Phil Collins classic, “One More Night“, he sings a line that, according to his management, goes “Baby give me one more night”, although sounds much more like “Gary give me one more night” – a slightly unfortunate situation for a dancehall artist. I think it could be “Carey” (the name of his babymother) and that the autotune messed with his voice to make it sound like Gary, but whatever the words are, the story has caused a bit of a stir in Jamaica.

At Sting 2009, Andrew & Wada Blood (sons of reggae star Junior Reid) launched a surprise attack on Busy with their tune “Dem Wrong“, asking “how badman fe ah sing gay song?” and receiving a huge forward with a reference to Busy’s massive hit “Unknown Number“:

The girl ah call, an him nah answer.
She still ah call, an him nah answer.
But mek mi tell you why him nah answer.
Him and Gary lock up in a Lancer.

Also at Sting, Twins of Twins joked about Gary in their tune “Mix Up“,  asking how the tune ever ended up sounding that way: “Who ah di producer? Who engineer it? Who mix di song deh? who did prepare it? Mi waan know how some people hear baby, mi know sey mi hear it – Busy ah beg one more night from Gary”.

It’s yet to be seen whether Busy will come out with a counteraction, but at a point in his career where he’s so close to achieving mainstream success, he needs to tread carefully. In other words, Busy, don’t be a hot head!
